Born on October 30, 1970 in Beijing, China, Xie Jun won the Women's World Champion in 1995 in a surprise upset by defeating the favorite, Maia Chiburdanidze from Georgia
(1991-1995). In 1993, She earned the title of Men’s Grandmaster. December 1997, she played in Women's World Championship Candidates' Tournament, and got 2nd Place. August 1998, she became the Women's World Championship Challenger thanks to the forfeit of her Candidate's Final opponent Alisa Galliamova. In 1999, due to the forfeit of Zsuzsa Polgar, She played and defeated Galliamova for the Women's Championship title in the summer of 1999. The last bout was in December, 2000 - defeating Kanying Qin, also from China

Winner of rapid chess match against overall world championship finalist Nigel Short [Monaco - march, 1993 ]
Winner of Olympic Gold medals (as the Top board of the Hungarian team with her sisters) in the chess Olympiads of 1988, 1990 and silver in 1994. Also earned individual gold medal in 1990 for Top board performance.

On the way to the championship, defeating former world champion for 13 years, Maya Chiburdanidze with a score of 5.5:1.5 [St. Petersburg, Russia - March 1995]
Winner of the World Championship in chess for women, by defeating former champion, Xie Jun with a score of 8.5:4.5 [ Jaen, Spain - February 1996]
Taught chess in a Harlem public school (Mott Hall) for one year. (1996/7)
